If you want a spectacular trip, your best opportunity is during the dry season between May and October. However, keep in mind that even during the dry season, there may be mornings and afternoons with a bit of rain and some fog that may appear.
It is highly recommended to carry a backpack or rucksack, as suitcases can be cumbersome and difficult to place on buses, under seats, etc. Keep in mind that you will typically have to lift your luggage on and off buses and trains, and also carry it up hotel stairs. Wheeled suitcases may not be useful on dirt floors or cobblestone streets.
Keep in mind that Peru is a country with a wide variety of climates. Our best advice is to check the weather conditions in each of your destinations. In particular, the climate of Cusco City is marked by 2 seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The time when there is no probability of rain is when all tourists want to travel to Machu Picchu, and this can be alarming for you if you are planning to hike or trek to Machu Picchu. So, you can travel to Machu Picchu any time of the year, but in the rainy season it is better not to do the treks.
We always recommend carrying the least amount of weight possible, although the specific requirements for a trip vary greatly depending on where and when you go. Our “Travel Information” document includes a packing suggestion list that you can download on the trip summary pages. These lists correspond to each specific tour and are based on our team’s experience in the destination.
If you are planning to travel solo, you must be at least 18 years old. There are no upper age limits for most of our tours (although 18-to-thirtysomething trips are restricted to people between 18 and 39 years old). On the other hand, travelers with prior health issues have to fill out a medical questionnaire. Our family adventures are open to families with children between 6 and 17 years old. Our normal (non-family) adventures are available to children aged 12 or older if accompanied by a parent (up to a maximum of two children per adult).
Mit Viajes has an amazing discount for students. The discount is about $20 on any trail or trekking. You must show your student ID to receive the discount.
Acclimatization is the first and most important thing. On the first day in Cusco, we can do a lighter schedule. All this to enjoy the day and see the Plaza de Armas and other nearby places.
