Puno - Peru
One day before starting the tour in Puno, you will be picked up from your hotel at 9:40 PM to be taken to the bus terminal in Cusco, where you will board the interprovincial bus departing at 10:15 PM to Puno. The journey takes approximately 7 hours.
PLACES TO VISIT: FLOATING ISLANDS OF LOS UROS
The floating islands of the Uros are a set of living artificial surfaces made of totora, an aquatic plant that grows on the surface of Lake Titicaca. The islands rise above parts of the lake’s surface, covered with blocks of totora roots on which successive layers of woven or intertwined totora mats are placed. Their inhabitants, the Uros, are an ancient people currently concentrated in the Collao plateau and, in Peru, on the floating islands located in the Puno Bay.
AMANTANI ISLAND
Amantani Island is located north of Taquile Island on Lake Titicaca. Its shape is nearly circular, with an average diameter of 3.4 km. It covers an area of 9.28 km², making it the largest island on the Peruvian side of the lake. Its highest point, the Llacas Tití mountain, reaches 4,150 meters above sea level, 320 meters above the lake’s surface (3,810 meters above sea level).
TAQUILE ISLAND
Taquile Island, on Lake Titicaca, belongs to the Amantani district, Puno, Peru, and is located 45 km from the regional capital. It has a population of approximately 2,200 inhabitants. The main village sits at an altitude of 3,950 meters above sea level, and the island’s highest point reaches 4,050 meters above sea level.
Upon arriving at the bus terminal in Puno, a transfer will be waiting for you holding a sign with your name and calling you out; once you meet them, they will take you to the Casona de Puno Hotel.
The transfer will provide instructions about your tour, and you will also have time to have breakfast before heading to the Puno port.
At Puno port, you will be informed about which boat to board to start the tour, which will take approximately 40 minutes to reach the Uros Floating Islands. Upon arrival, you will receive a guided tour from the president of the small island, where we will make a stop. Afterwards, the president will offer a ride on a boat made entirely of totora reeds, taking you to the main island.
On the main island, you will find small restaurants and shops where you can buy water, soft drinks, cookies, etc.
After visiting the Uros Island, we return to our boat to go to the second island, Amantani, which takes approximately 1 hour. Here, we will have a traditional lunch, be introduced to the families offering their homes for accommodation, and then settle in to rest. In the afternoon, you will visit the island’s attractions and learn about local customs.
In the evening, after dinner, the locals will host a small party with live music.
Early in the morning, after a traditional and refreshing breakfast, we return to our boat to go to the third and final island, Taquile. The locals welcome us in their main square, explain their customs, daily activities, and we will explore much of the island. Afterwards, we will have a farewell lunch and return to the city of Puno, where the transfer will take you back to the hotel. The next day, the transfer will take you to the bus for the Ruta del Sol back to Cusco.
